PrimaLoft®: High-Performance Insulation for Snow Gear

What Is PrimaLoft®?

PrimaLoft® is a trusted brand of synthetic microfiber insulation, originally developed in the 1980s for the U.S. Army and now widely used in outdoor gear including snow gear, gloves, sleeping bags, and footwear. Known for combining lightweight warmth, water resistance, and compressibility, its fibers create tiny air pockets that trap heat—delivering a down-like feel with easier care and consistent performance.

Why PrimaLoft® Black Is the Smart Option

PrimaLoft® Black insulation uses a sophisticated structure of coarse hollow fibers wrapped with ultrafine filaments to mimic the warmth and loft of 550-fill down, achieving about 0.7 CLO—roughly 17× warmer than cotton padding. But it’s PrimaLoft® Black’s water-resistant treatment that makes it stand out: even when exposed to moisture, it retains around 90% of its warmth, maintaining reliable insulation in wet, snowy or sweat-heavy conditions—far outperforming down.

Lightweight, Packable, and Durable

In addition to thermal performance, Black insulation excels in daily wear. It resists compression, rebounds after packing or sitting, dries quickly, and works well in machine wash cycles without clumping. It also keeps garments slim and non-bulky, while offering longevity at a more accessible price point than premium down—making it a practical, performance-focused solution for snow and mountain gear.

Recycled Content: Lightweight and Responsible

PrimaLoft® Black insulation (including ThermoPlume® variants) is now available as 100% post-consumer recycled—made entirely from PET plastic bottles. This supports both lightweight design and environmental responsibility without compromising warmth or durability.
